Not too long ago, the word networking meant something, the word had a certain opportunity and optimism attached to it. Company Christmas parties were about more than getting your salaries worth at the open bar, they were a chance to finally rub shoulders with some of the higher ups and get yourself noticed – and hopefully out of the mail room.
Networking used to be about making the opportunity to network. It was a calculated move that showed ambition, drive and a certain level of self confidence. Now however, with the explosion of social media, networking seems to be something that people do between lunch and being productive.
The adage, ‘nothing worth doing is easy’ seems relevant here. But,with tools like Facebook, LinkedIn and others networking seems to be getting easier and easier. Is networking too easy, or am I just old fashioned? And if it is too easy, is that a bad thing?
Any thoughts?

“…networking seems to be something that people do between lunch and being productive.” Ouch, my aching heart. There’s a difference between signing up on social networking websites and actually social networking.
I think the scenario still applies to in-person networking at company events. Anyone can show up at the event and sit pretty. But, is he taking the initiative to stand up and introduce himself to new people. Is he participating in conversations? Or is he only there because he thinks it makes him look good?
It’s about being PRoactive, buddy. Sign up online, experiment on the websites, see how they are useful and what you can use them for.
I don’t think the old fashion situation has changed very much. It just exists in two spaces now.
Good question Marc, and well said Rayanne. Social media is another tool for networking, but it still takes effort, consideration and strategy to use the tool effectively.
